Entry #5: Mayhem

Tailgater :30 | Allstate Mayhem - YouTube

The Allstate Mayhem campaign was a marketing strategy using many rhetorical methods to pull in new customers. The slogan was to enroll in Allstate Insurance to "protect yourself from mayhem". Specifically, the "Tailgater" episode was constructive.

The commercial starts out with the character "Mayhem" driving to a tailgate party while also physically tailgating the car in front of him. This scene sparks some humor with the ironic situation but also creates personalization because a majority of people have all experienced similar types of annoying traffic incidents. It may bring up old memories or familiar feelings about these situations. In circumstances like this, it is very common to watch through the rearview mirror to check the status of your car with someone else in close proximity.

The commercial implies that because you are watching through the rearview mirror, you end up rear-ending the person in front of you. The ironic but factual appeal to anxiety acts as an effective rhetorical method because situations like this are so common. Relatability is what draws in the audience and keeps them there.
